What is Fibromyalgia?

Dr. Siamak Rouzroch explains that fibromyalgia (FMS), originally called fibrositis, is a chronic condition that can be challenging to treat and manage by patients.  FMS etiology remains unclear but it attacks women more often than men. It is estimated that three to six million people are affected in the US!  Some research suggests that hormonal imbalance may be a factory. Fibromyalgia is characterized by constant presence of widespread pain that often moves about the body, tender points and, commonly other conditions such as chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, and depression.  It can be so severe that it can be incapacitating for many patients.

How is Fibromyalgia Diagnosed?

Unfortunately there are no definitive tests for diagnosis.  No one laboratory text or imaging studies can diagnose FMS, however, research has revealed that upon a physical examination, the presence of 18 specific points in  muscles and tendons are tender and painful to touch. The identifying criteria for diagnosis are pain or tenderness in at least 11 of the 18 targeted joints.  Dr.’s Rouzroch and Bardi are skilled in the examination process and can determine if you are suffering with FMS.  Fibromyalgia is often mistakenly diagnosed as chronic fatigue syndrome as most patients complain of extreme fatigue.  Headaches and jaw pain is also common. Stress can also cause flare-ups and exacerbate a patient’s symptoms.

How is Fibromyalgia Treated?

At Optimum Health Medical Center, Dr.’s Rouzroch and Bardi employ an integrated approach of medical, chiropractic manipulation, nutritional and individualized exercise program for patients.  Trigger point injections with lidocaine, physical therapy, and therapeutic massage have proven to be effective for patients.  Anti-depressants have found to be helpful for patients suffering with fibromyalgia.

It should be noted that fibromyalgia is a chronic condition so ongoing management is needed.  The treatment goals are to control pain and improve function.

The “Live Pain FreeProgram at Optimum Health Medical Center  is unique as there is a customized therapeutic treatment plan recommended that includes medical management, chiropractic therapies and lifestyle changes including diet.
